What is the Sandwich Rule for absence on both preceding and following days of a weekly off or holiday?
The Sandwich Rule is an attendance policy used by many organizations to prevent employees from taking advantage of holidays or weekly offs.
Key idea -
If an employee is absent on the working days immediately before and after a weekly off or holiday, the intervening day(s) (the weekly off or holiday) are also treated as unpaid or Loss of Pay (LOP), even though normally those days would not require leave.
Example -
Weekly Off: Saturday & Sunday
Holiday: Monday
Employee absent: Friday and Tuesday
Day | Status |
Friday | Absent (LOP) |
Saturday | Weekly Off β Marked as LOP because Friday & Tuesday are absent |
Sunday | Weekly Off β Marked as LOP (if policy includes multiple consecutive offs) |
Monday | Holiday β Marked as LOP because surrounded by absences |
Tuesday | Absent (LOP) |
