What is the Sandwich Rule for absence on both preceding and following days of a weekly off or holiday?

The Sandwich Rule is an attendance policy used by many organizations to prevent employees from taking advantage of holidays or weekly offs.

Key idea -
If an employee is absent on the working days immediately before and after a weekly off or holiday, the intervening day(s) (the weekly off or holiday) are also treated as unpaid or Loss of Pay (LOP), even though normally those days would not require leave.

Example -

  • Weekly Off: Saturday & Sunday

  • Holiday: Monday

  • Employee absent: Friday and Tuesday

Day

Status

Friday

Absent (LOP)

Saturday

Weekly Off β†’ Marked as LOP because Friday & Tuesday are absent

Sunday

Weekly Off β†’ Marked as LOP (if policy includes multiple consecutive offs)

Monday

Holiday β†’ Marked as LOP because surrounded by absences

Tuesday

Absent (LOP)
